This Is Every Parent’s Worst Nightmare

On April 3rd 1999 Barney Miller’s mother, Helen Miller, received a call that all parents dread.

Everyone believed 19 year old Barney Miller was destined to become a pro surfer.

Having already been approached by sponsors, Barney’s lifelong dream was finally becoming a reality.

… but in an instant everything about the world he knew changed.

Barney’s mother, Helen, took the phone from her daughter’s hand and listened as a stranger explained how Barney had been involved in a serious car accident, and that he couldn’t feel his legs.

Barney was told he would never be able to use two legs and one arm, the ultimate diagnosis being C6 Quadriplegia. ‘His mum actually shocked me, she just went into super mum. When the accident happened she really stepped up. I was shocked at her strength, she just went full force, was by Barney’s side, whatever he needed, and was strong in her support’ Barney’s friend, Toby Webber.

With the incredible & relentless support from Helen, Barney would start an extraordinary journey to regain the use of his legs.

This inspirational story of exceptional will, unwavering spirit and sheer determination is documented in the feature ‘YOU and ME’, screening in Australian cinemas April 16, 2016.
